The design teams of Alfa Romeo <\/strong>for the Tonale<\/strong>\nconcept, Peugeot<\/strong> for the 208<\/strong> and Citro\u00ebn<\/strong> for its product range design are the winners of the Car\nDesign Award 2019, the new edition of the historical, coveted Oscar of world\nautomotive design instituted in 1984 on the initiative of the magazine Auto\n& Design and its founder Fulvio Cinti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award ceremony took place in Turin on 19 June as\npart of the Parco Valentino Turin Motor Show<\/strong>, with the participation of Giorgetto\nGiugiaro<\/strong>, already winner of past editions, as Guest of Honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Car Design Award was assigned for fourteen\nconsecutive editions up to 1997. The award was then revived in 2016 in a\ncompletely renewed incarnation, faithful, however, to the spirit that had\nalways characterised it: to reward the authors of projects that have made a\nsignificant contribution to the evolution of car design. Today as before, the\nwinners are decided by a jury of experts representing the most prestigious\nworld car magazines, thus ensuring an objective judgment on the world car\ndesign scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Car Design Award is divided into three categories:\ntwo of them, \u201cConcept Cars<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cProduction Cars<\/strong>\u201d, are historical\nand have been joined by a third, \u201cBrand Design Language<\/strong>\u201d, an award to\nthe design team that has worked best to maintain the consistency and\ntransversality of a brand\u2019s formal language over the entire product range. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The winners of the 2019 edition are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • for the Concept Car <\/strong>section, the Alfa Romeo<\/strong> design team for its Tonale <\/strong>project; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    second place to Peugeot<\/strong>\ndesign for the E-Legend, and third place to Citro\u00ebn<\/strong> for the Ami One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • the award for best\nproject in the Production Cars <\/strong>section\ngoes to Peugeot<\/strong> design for the 208 <\/strong>(with second place going to the Mazda3\nand third place to the Automobili Pininfarina Battista project).<\/li>
    • taking away the prize\nin the Brand Design Language <\/strong>sectionis the Citro\u00ebn <\/strong>team (followed by the Mercedes-Benz and Mazda design\nteams, respectively second and third).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      “The response we get from the style centres every time we let them know,\nconfidentially, that they have won the Car Design Award, is confirmation of how\nmuch it is coveted and is considered the oscar of automotive design\nworldwide”, said Silvia Baruffaldi<\/strong>, editor of Auto&Design and\nPresident of the Car Design Award Jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The winners received trophies specially designed and\nproduced by Brembo<\/strong>, a partner of the prize since its revival. “For Brembo, one of the variables with the greatest impact is surely technology\nand how it has evolved over time, and this has allowed us to remain at the\nforefront. But over the years we have always been very attentive to styling\naspects too, to the extent that our brakes have become a design object”, noted\nAlberto Ferrari<\/strong>, Brembo Marketing Manager at the award ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      CAR DESIGN AWARD 2019, JURY MOTIVATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      CONCEPT CARS, ALFA ROMEO TONALE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cRather than taking design clues from\nits mid-size Stelvio SUV, Alfa Romeo said the inspiration for the Tonale\ncompact SUV came from the historic Giulia GT coupe. The Tonale offers sporty\nproportions but avoids the shortcut of a clearly descending roofline typical of\nmany contemporary coupe-SUVs. The headlights reduced to a thin lightbar give a\nmore prominent role to the Italian brand\u2019s iconic Scudetto<\/em>, in a\ndesign that is at once simple but injected with emotion and sportiness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      PRODUCTION CARS, PEUGEOT 208 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWith the 208, Peugeot demonstrated that\ndesign could play a crucial role in moving a mainstream small car upscale.\nWhile the exterior reinterprets the proportions of the legendary 205 GTI, the\nrear immediately reconnects with the contemporary 3008 SUV. Also astonishing is\nthe interior, with components carried over from larger models, as well as the\nfirst 3D instrument panel in a production car.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      BRAND DESIGN LANGUAGE, CITRO\u00cbN DESIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cCitro\u00ebn has evolved the quirky design language born with the C4 Cactus and its Air Bumps into a more palatable design philosophy, created to give the French brand a \u201ccheer & cheerful\u201d family feeling that now comprises the C3 small car, as well as the C3 and C5 Aircross crossovers. Citro\u00ebn also brilliantly uses two-toned painting to have its range stand out from the crowd of other mainstream brands, going far beyond the simple connotation of the Double Chevron on the front end\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
